It occured to me that it has been sometime since I took my girlfriend out on a picnic and then camping afterward. Even though it's freezing outside, there had to be a way. Fortunately, her mom has a house sitting empty for sale. I called and ok'ed it, and the plan was formed. Without telling her, I dropped by after work and set up the picnic (blankets on floor, plates, candles in holders, sliverware, basket, foreman grill and coleman stove), and dropped off the tent. I proceeded on home where I showered and gathered my over night stuff. She met me and we headed out, without her knowing where we were going. I took the long, circular route, so that it took her a while to figure it out. We pulled into the car port and grabbed our sleeping bags. "I thought that we could have a nice meal," she stepped inside the door, flipped on the lights and saw the picnic setup, "like a picnic, since it's been so long since we did that." We grilled the steaks, made the mashed potatos and sugar snap peas on the stove, and ate supper by candle light on the floor. Then we set up the tent and layered the blankets/sleeping bags. In the morning we fed each other strawberries (mmm.... breakfast in bed!). After loading our stuff back in the car, we headed out to go geocaching. It was a wonderful evening/day, complete with great company, good food and great conversation. If you want to try something similar, you don't need an empty house. Make room on your living room floor. Spread out a blanket/sheet, light up the candles (those things drip, so put something under them), and stare into each other's eyes as you eat. If you don't have a tent, hang up a sheet like when you were a kid. Camping doesn't have to be outside. In situations like this, it's the idea and the company that matter! |
