Well, my girlfriend and I signed up for the Motorcycle Safety Course (learn to ride, get our licenses and an insurance break) and it is coming up this weekend. She didn't know how to drive a manual, and was nervous about trying to learn while on a motorcycle. She's never been on a motorcycle, either. So, I borrowed her brother-in-law's truck and proceeded to try and teach her. She's got a lot of room out in front of the barn, but she was afraid she would hit something (ie: my car/the tractor). We loaded up and went down the road to the elementary school. After stalling out about 4 times (twice because she got scared when we started moving :P) we drove around the school building a number of times. Next we proceeded to shift up into the higher gears, and she got the hang of that well enough. Since she was able to drive, I told her we could go on home... but she was driving. "WHAT?!" with a crazed look in her eyes. "Sure, it's night time, there's no traffic, and you know what you're doing." She worked up the nerve, and she drove us on home. The only problems we had (besides that missing of 4th into 2nd each time), was that she's used to driving a PT Cruiser, and the full-sized extended cab Ford is bigger than she's used to, and she got too close to the edge of the road a couple of times on the curves. Now she can drive a manual shift, at least well enough to get from point A to B. It was an interesting "date" that gave us something to do together. |
