Influence of porn on sexuality

This thread is inspired by another thread I read concerning men's apparent fixation on anal sex. I started replying to that thread, but decided that my response really deserves a thread of its own. Below is what I was going to post about Why are guys interested in anal sex? and women not?

There are girls who really like anal sex, but then again there are girls into bdsm who boast about getting scratches, cuts, and bruises. I don't believe anal sex is the ultimate goal of all men. Here's my theory on why it has recently found some popularity:

Internet pornography is an extremely competitive industry, and the companies who produce it are always trying to come up with something more shocking than their competitors. Moreover, porn site advertisers are notoriously aggressive spammers. Lots of people have been exposed to some really sick **** they otherwise wouldn't have even considered. The end result of this is that some really perverse stuff has leaked into mainstream media and popular culture. For example, "ass to mouth" was covered the latest Kevin Smith film.

On the one hand, you've got a society that's really uptight about sexuality. If there wasn't a scarcity of sexual gratification, porn sites would not and could not exist. Really, you can only blame society for being so uptight in the first place. A crackdown on porn is only gonna make the remaining porn producers richer.

I think pornography would exist regardless of how much 'sexual gratification' society was afforded; but I think you do bring up an interesting theory. Pornography has proven to put a false image of sex in the minds of some viewers, especially younger ones, and perhaps your idea is an accurate extension.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around your thoughts here because it reads as though you consider anal sex to be sick. I hope that's not what you're saying. There are certainly truly sick things out there, but I really don't see anal sex that way. Anal fisting...that's a little weird. But to call something sick, it would have to be worse than that, in my opinion.

Nah, I'm saying that some porn today is sooooo sick that it makes anal sex looks as tame as a blowjob. Here's some stuff I consider sick:
  1. Ass To Mouth — Basicly a blowjob right after anal sex. This is where the girl sucks her own **** off the guy's ****. I think that's kind of sick.
  2. double anal penetration — This is two guys sticking their **** in the ass of the same girl at the same time. The cocks are actually rubbing together. Maybe that's just me being a little homophobic. in any case, I can't jack off to it.
  3. pissing in a girl's mouth — Self explanitory, pissing in a guy's mouth isn't any better.
  4. eating or playing with **** — The Japanese seem to just love this ****.
  5. gagging and vomiting — This stuff is sicker than the scat stuff. It generally involves a guy forcefully ****ing a girls throat until she gags and vomits all over his crotch. Again, this is just porn I can't get off on.

That's by no means a complete list, but the bar has certainly been raised on what it takes to make porn offensive. My point was that anal sex is considered light, like a blowjob these days, and mainstream porn almost always includes some anal play.

(yeah, I do watch a hell of a lot of porn -- at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week)

Okay...I get what you're saying. I'm not sure how much this has desensitized people though. I mean, I think all that stuff is sick and I don't see anything wrong with anal sex, but I never have really. I'm also not convinced that everyone who's cool with anal sex has been exposed to the things you've listed. I think overall, even outside the porn business, people are becoming more open-minded about sex in a lot of ways. I would even attribute some of that the the GLBT movement which is still pressing forward and while they have a long way to go, I think they've caused a lot of people to re-evaluate sexuality.

Excellent point about the GLBT movement. There's a lot of people in the GLBT community in Hollywood, and it does show through in movies and television. I can't say that porn alone has made people more open-minded about anal sex. I can say that porn companies have to work hard to come up with stuff that's outrageous enough to set themselves apart from their competitors, and anal is now presented as normal fare while a few years ago, it wasn't.

There's absolutely no doubt that the GLBT movement has had a huge influence on the porn industry. Gays absolutely LOOOOOOOVE porn. Per capita, much, much more than straight men. I'd even say that it's had a large influence on straight porn as well.

You make a really good point.

Let me preface by saying I love quality porn and I'm very open minded to porn. I was also exposed at an early age to porn and I really think that anal sex aside, it does create some unrealistic sexual expectations in general sometimes.

I think guys like me who've watched a lot of porn, have expectations of how girls should behave and what kinds of sexual acts we expect to be "automatic." I also think it creates an unrealistic expectation of how soon sex should begin in relationships. I've dated some very close-minded girls and some EXTREMELY open minded girls, but it still seems no matter how open minded someone can be, there can still be some unrealistic porn-influenced expectations. I even think girls who are very much into porn can have unrealistic expectations of men when it comes to sex.

I do agree how ever that this country is slowly becoming a little less up-tight, but still has a long way to go when compared to some other countries around the world. I just think that porn is not necessarily the means by which this opening of people's minds should take place.

While we're on the topic, I don't think porn in the classic sense is the only thing that creates unrealistic expectations. For example, those ridiculous "romance" novels that women read can create an unrealistic expectation as well.

Very good point. I didn't even think of that, and not that I'm challenging you, I just wonder how many women 18 to 30, the younger generations really read those anymore.

But there are a few things in society that create unrealistic expectations. Don't get me wrong, I like porn and think there is nothing wrong with it, but I think there are many people who absorb it the wrong way.

I think they've been replaced with fanfiction. I know a lot of women that read erotica so I think it's still popular, but in a different package.
